Knowing Your Games Limits
During a recent round with a few friends it became evident that although they all understood roughly how far they hit the ball and the shape it normally took, each of them at least 3 times during the round attempted to play a shot that was not in their game.
The best way to always get the best of your game and shoot close or under your handicap is to play within yourself, if you know your 7 iron goes 135m and you always play a fade, don't attempt to hit it over water with a carry of 150m and draw it around a tree, this will almost always result costing both shots and balls.
Asses your options according to your skill level, take enough club to comfortably carry the trouble, the back edge of the green is a much better place to finish than facing a chip over the trouble again.
Know your standard shot shape and play with it, Steve Ballesteros famously said after winning the British Open from the car park "you dance with the lady you brung" meaning if he stood on the range and hit a fade he would play the day with a fade and likewise if he was hitting a draw as there is no use in fighting it.
