With the Pacific Games now behind us we can look back and reflect on why we came back without medals. Round 1 for both the Men’s and Ladies teams was where we let ourselves down, neither team could afford to give teams like New Caledonia, Tahiti, Guam or Samoa a 13 -15 shot advantage. Days 2 & 3 were much better as both teams found a groove and closed the gap, when the heavens opened on the final day and play was suspended we had Olaf Allen Jnr standing on the 18th tee at 1 under, Vikrant Chandra on the tee at the easy par 5 16th at even par and Anuresh Chandra on the 18th fairway at 2 over par and were looking at a possible bronze, but when play was abandoned the day 3 standings decided the medals. It was a similar story for our ladies who had also moved into bronze medal position only to have the rain drown their hopes and no medals around their necks.
The one message that was very clear from my trip is we need to create better & more affordable pathways for the youth of Fiji to become involved in the game. Each afternoon at De Tina Golf Club between 8-16 juniors were practicing and doing chipping and putting drills, with this happening its very little wonder New Caledonia won the Gold Medals in Men’s & Ladies teams and individual. The individual Male and Ladies were both teenagers and the Male winner was just 14. The National Golf of Fiji and the Clubs of Fiji have a mission in front of them to introduce affordable pathways to get young golfers coming through, to do it we will need the support of corporate Fiji to grow the game we all love, to get involved contact National Golf on 3310738 or email ngaf [at] connect [dot] com [dot] fj (ngaf [at] connect [dot] com [dot] fj)

Helpful Hints: - Escaping greenside rough.
You have done nearly everything right and your ball does the wrong thing by you and rolls through the green and nestles in the greenside rough. o Examine your lie before choosing your club, a mistake a lot of golfers make is to try and play all greenside shots with one club, whether it’s right or not. o Always have a couple of practice swings away from your ball in similar grass as this will give you a feel of what’s going to happen when you play your shot. o Set your weight more on your front side, this encourages a steeper angle of attack into the ball and will help stop the grass grabbing the club head, o Accelerate through the shot, all too often we are guilty of stopping after impact, when this happens the club head is decelerating and causes false shots.
Until next week enjoy your golf. |
