Golfing in Paradise

as published in the Fiji Sun - 4 June 2011

This week sees the commencement of the major golfing events for Fiji, on Friday the Blue Gas Nadi Open gets underway at the Nadi Airport Golf Club, there will be a strong field chasing the title including Fiji Amateur Champion Vikrant Chandra who will be attempting to take the title from fellow Fiji National Team mate and defending champion Anuresh Chandra. Both will be pushed by other National Team members like Olaf Allen Jnr and the newly invigorated Roneel Prakash and my dark horse to challenge the field is Tristan Levistam who has been much improved recently and his 4th placed finish in the Fiji Amateur is a sign of things to come.

The weekend also sees the staging of the 15th Air New Zealand Koru Club Pro-am at Denarau, tournament organizer Richard Ellis who has run the event since its inception says the event is only getting stronger and is one the professionals and amateurs alike mark on their calendar every year. For those of you that want to see how the game can be played by some very good professionals should come out to Denarau on Sunday and watch the groups come up the 18th or wander around the course.

Next week there are a couple of pro-ams along te Coral Coast with the Shangri-la pro-am on Wednesday the 8th and the Club Car Natadola Bay Pro-am on Thursday the 9th at Natadola Bay both have strong professional fields and have places open for amateurs to play alongside pros like defending Fiji Open Champion Mike Hendry and previous winners like Matthew Griffin, contact the clubs to enter. The events then move to The Digicel Fiji Open at The Pearl over the Queen's Birthday long weekend June 11-13, there are still places available for amateurs to play in the countries National Open along these professionals on Fiji's first championship layout that will still test every facet of your game.

Helpful Hints: - Never Giving up on a round

Every time we stand on the first tee we all have high hopes for the 18 holes ahead and the score we will shoot. After making our par on the first we are well pleased as we stand on the second tee, however after 3 bogies and a double we get to the sixth tee condemning our round and our game has gone and thinking of all the things we could've done with our time apart from this. My tip for this week is quite simply this, (one that took me a long time to get a grip of) with 13 holes still left to play the round is far from over and our score not even close to blown. Stay positive and think of each shot as the first shot you have hit for the day, don't keep track of the score you are having until the 9th and 18th holes. By doing this you will stay in the moment and give yourself every chance to shoot the best score you can on the day no matter what it is.

To all those playing in the Fiji Open or other events over the coming I wish you all good luck and until next week enjoy your golf.
